Okay first the movie 21, based on the true story of an Asian guy who joins a group of student card counters who take Vegas for millions, comes out. For that movie they changed the Asian main character to a white guy presumably because Hollywood doesn’t think Americans will go see a movie about an Asian.
Now Speed Racer comes out. It’s based on the English version of a Japanese anime cartoon. But the English version didn’t change the anime, Speed Racer is still Japanese! But for the movie? Nope, they made Speed Racer a white kid. Am I missing something? Is it now okay to whiten characters in story adaptations to try to make it sell a little more? Would Americans really not go see a movie because an Asian is the main character? Is Hollywood being racist or is it just me?
