It was bound to happen: A reality show producer was arrested for false imprisonment of contestants on a new reality show. (full details here) Lots of reality shows penalize contestants for leaving their designated reality zone, but to actually lock them in? Apparently that’s illegal.
It seems like at least once a month I say to myself upon seeing an ad for a new reality show, “wow they can’t stoop any lower than this!” And then the next month, they do! The current leader in the race for most exploitative, evil, ridiculous ploy for ratings is “Moment of Truth” but I’m sure something will stoop lower soon enough.
On this Thursday’s “30 Rock” they refer to a fictional reality show called “Milf Island.” But staring at a headline that says “NBC Tests Sitcom And Family Hour Boundaries With “MILF Island“, I found myself completely accepting of the possibility that this was a real show. (Be honest, when you saw that picture you thought it was real, too.) It’s gotten to the point where there is no way to parody reality shows anymore because however outrageous the idea is, it’s going to become reality sooner or later.
Remember the episode of “Chapelle’s Show” that parodied reality TV? The fake reality show he made was “Trading Spouses”. And then sure enough, a short time later, there WAS a reality show called “Trading Spouses”. So I would make a joke here about a reality show where the loser each week is killed, but I’m afraid I’d be giving someone an idea…
