The Kings signing “pushers”
I’ve heard a lot of negative reaction to Geoff Petrie and the Sacramento Kings off-season free-agent signings. Adding Sean May and Desmond Mason isn’t going to take the team from 17 wins last season, to 47 wins this season. What it WILL do is provide 2, low-risk players that will push The Kings young core to compete harder.
Remember the magical 1998-1999 season, when Jason Williams was pushed by Jon Barry, Tariq Abdul Wahad was propelled by Vernon Maxwell, Peja by Corliss, etc. The same can hold true here, where May has a lot to prove, and will work hard to get on the court. That means that Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson have to give maximum effort, or they’ll be on the bench. Same goes for Francisco Garcia, Kevin Martin, Andres Nocioni and Amri Caspi, who’ll be competing with Desmond Mason for playing time.
Look at the signings of May and Mason as effort insurance incentives, and if they don’t work out, they both only have the 1 year deal.
