Jamarcus Russell and the Opportunity For the Raiders

2010 could mean a wide open salary cap in the NFL, which could present an opportunity for several teams. The most glaring of these comes in the form of the Oakland Raiders, who can dump Jamarcus Russell for only $3 million and get $15 million off the cap. I’d say that’s a win/win.

The other side of the equation-there are going to be a lot of free agents, but not necessarily a lot of talent available to choose from.

If you’re a Raider fan though, you ought to be overjoyed at that prospect. C’mon 2010!

49ers Get Good News? Reggie Wayne May Not Play

Not a lot is being said on Reggie Wayne’s groin injury, other than it is day to day. If you’re the 49ers though, you have to wonder if you are going to catch a break on Sunday.

So what do the Colts do if he doesn’t go? They have plenty of weapons. A guy like Austin Collie or Pierre Garcon could explode on Sunday, especially Collie who many love. Also, we may see more double tight end sets. Either way, it’s going to be a tough one for the 49ers this week.

It’s Official-Alex Smith Is Your New Starter

It had to happen. After what Alex Smith did against the Houston Texans on Sunday, he had to be named the starting quarterback of the 49ers, and now it’s officially happened.

Mike Singeltary said that this isn’t a week to week back and forth at the position either. This is permanent. Given the fact that the 49ers were 30th in offense, and had the most punts and 3 and outs in the league under Sean Hill, new life was needed. After Sunday’s success with the spread offense with Michael Crabtree, you can’t help but be excited for the future. Let’s just wait until after next week with the Colts.

Raiders Cable Won’t Be Punished

(photo-Paul Sakuma / Associated Press)

There just wasn’t enough evidence to bring down Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable, for allegedly beating his assistant coach senseless, according to reports.

Not only did it sound like Randy Hanson made up the story, which didn’t match any of the others in the room, but it sounded as if he had an axe to grind towards the Raiders organization.

“It should be further noted that within the past week and a half, Mr. Hanson showed up unannounced at the police department and made a statement to the effect that since the Raiders had not given him what he asked for, he would now fully cooperate with the prosecution,” said one of the investigators.

Fox Sports has more.

Matt Holliday Will Command Big Money

So you think the Giants might be interested in going after a guy like Matt Holliday? Think again. His agent Scott Boras is thinking Teixeria money, even though he’s not that good. That would be in the neighborhood of 8 years $180 million. Boston might be more realistic, and the Mets are interested. St. Louis isn’t looking like a player either, since they have to resign Albert Pujols.

Superintendents Do A Super Job

By ESPN 1320’s Frank LaRosa

While Bill Murray’s character in the movie, “Caddyshack” was a lovable goofball, Carl Spackler bears little resemblance to today’s unsung heroes, the golf course superintendents. Long before we leave the comfort of our beds to dress for a round of golf, your local superintendent has been on the job for hours.

Most of us don’t even notice they’re there, but we’d be howling mad if they weren’t setting the pins, manicuring the greens, mowing the fairways, trimming the trees, and altogether making our experiences on the golf course a pleasure. (Your bad shots are on you!)

When you stand on that first tee and admire your surroundings, the green grass, and the beauty of nature, it would be a good time to recognize the contributions made by the golf course superintendents. They’ve been doing this for a very long time. In fact, they were green….before green was routine!

Next time out, take the time to offer a pat on the back to your local golf course superintendent. Let them know how much you appreciate what they do to make your day so enjoyable.

Oak Ridge’s Austin Collie running with The Colts

Week 5 in the N F L: several comebacks, plus memorable no-shows by the 49ers and Raiders, plus a quiet breakout game too…Rookie Austin Collie, a Wide Receivers for the Colts, had the best game of his young career. Catching 8 Peyton Manning passes for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns. Collie has impressively stepped up in the absence of Anthony Gonzalez…that’s nothing new to those familiar with Oak Ridge Football.

While at Oak Ridge High in El Dorado Hills, he won numerous awards, including Northern California’s Most Valuable Player. Collie went on to impress playing collegiately at B Y U. When you think about the possibilities in Indianapolis, teaming up with Payton Manning, there’s real potential for Collie to continue this kind of growth. The talent is there; seems like every play he’s involved in, it’s a gutsy catch, great effort.

Under the radar receiver, gaining chemistry with a great quarterback: worked for Wes Welker in New England…and it appears to be going that way for Oak Ridge Alum, Austin Collie with The Colts.
