It was 10 years ago today (October 23, 1998) that our girl Britney Spears release her first ever single “…Baby One More Time.” I dug the single out of the End’s archives today, and played it for Random Retro. I cracked up reading what it says about her so much that I had to share it with you! Here’s what her record company said about her on the CD single back in 1998…

Born 16 years ago in Kentwood, Louisana, Britney Spears always wanted to sing. Performing since early childhood in local dance reviews and church choirs, she auditioned for the Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse Club series at age eight in Atlanta. Too young for the series but too talented to dismiss, a producer on the show helped her secure an agent in New York, where she spent the next three summers studying at the renowned Off-Broadway Dance Center and at the Professional Performing Arts School. She then began appearing in national commercials and Off-Broadway shows. At 11, she was accepted into the Mickey Mouse Club and spent two years performing on the popular children’s TV show filmed in Orlando. When Britney turned 15, she auditioned for an all-girl vocal group that led to her developing a solo career as a pop singer, while continuing her high school studies with tutors. Early this year, Britney was promptly snapped up by Jive Records. Britney Spears is ready to make her own special mark on the world. “I want to be an artist that everyone can relate to, that’s young, happy, and fun,” she says. With Britney’s ambition and true talent, success will be hers.

Little did then know back exactly what mark sweet little Britney would go on to leave on the world!! And then my favorite part, which was on the back of the single:

Untamed and untarnished as they come, the bright, beautiful teen Britney Spears is poised to liven up the pop world with the irresistible collection of songs on her Jive Records self-titled debut release, due out this fall.

Britney untarnished!! Haha! Ah, the good ol’ days! But we do have to give our girl Britney props for cleaning her life up, and wish her the best for her latest album coming out December 2nd!

Once and for all MTV has gotten their way. They don’t have to worry about the annoyance that is playing music videos anymore, because they finally announced the laying to rest of the once-mandatory viewing TRL. The show formerly known as Total Request Live that formerly had viewers was really the only hour left on Music TeleVision where one could actually find music (well, at least half of the song before they rudely chopped it off). Burying this fossil (yes, I was surprised it was actually still on, too!) will now free MTV up to fill that hour with more pointless snotty “reality” programming. I hear Audrina may get her own spin-off! Hallelujah!! Here’s an interesting article about 7 MTV icons which would not be allowed on the air at MTV today. A fun read.

So MTV took a bit of a risk by letting a virtual unknown host the VMA’s, and well, it blew up in their faces. It was going to be difficult for MTV to put together a show worse than last year’s horrible mess, but they pulled it off quite easily. Their unfortunate choice for host was Russell Brand, a stand-up “comedian” from the UK, who also had a bit part in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He introduced himself to America last night by telling us to, for the world’s sake, vote for Barack Obama, and then calling everyone who didn’t racists. Nice. He continued by calling our current president a retard. My friends, those are fightin’ words as far as I’m concerned, and honestly I’m surprised Kid Rock didn’t run out on stage right then and kick his butt all the way back to the UK. Hey Brand, next time you want to fly across the pond to insult our president and call us racists, do us all a favor and just stay home. The camera panned to the crowd while he was spewing all this nonsense, and everyone’s expressions ranged from stunned to downright embarrassed. Ciara was just shaking her head, and Britney looked a little confused, wondering how she ended up at an Obama campaign rally instead of the VMA’s.

I’ve got some words for you, Russell. You were here to host the VMA’s, not to preach to us about your political opinion, which was grossly out of place on that stage. But even if it weren’t, we couldn’t care less what you have to say about our choices for president anyway because you’re British, and have no idea the issues we’re facing here in the USA because you’re admittedly too busy putting cherry chapstick on your schlong (a lovely bit of knowledge he informed us of later in the evening). We don’t elect a president so you or the rest of the world will like us better, we’ll elect whichever man we feel can best run our country, regardless of what race he is. MTV, excellent choice of a host… you really outdid yourselves with that one. Brand was easily the worst excuse for a host the VMA’s have ever had. After his thud of an opening, he didn’t improve. Brand had nothing even remotely funny to say the rest of the evening either, usually just nervously recapping all the night’s earlier performances. The funniest line of the night actually came from presenter Jordin Sparks who fired back at him on his purity ring joking at the expense of the Jonas Brothers.

As a matter of fact MTV, I have a suggestion for you. Why don’t you just pull the plug altogether on the VMA’s? You have successfully managed to destroy a once meaningful and important franchise. They’ve been around 25 years, you had a good run. Just save yourselves the trouble and give up. Does MTV really have any credibility anymore when it comes to music anyway? They certainly don’t play videos. Who are they to tell us which videos are the best? YouTube should put on some sort of video award show. Wouldn’t that make more sense? I mean really, MTV picked “Piece Of Me” by Britney Spears as Video Of The Year. Now I love Britney as much as anybody, but c’mon, was that really the best video made this year? Either way, I’m done with the VMA’s. If MTV does make the mistake of holding them again next year, I won’t be wasting any more of my time watching.

It was another amazing EndFest yesterday out at the Sleep Train Ampitheater! It was our ninth EndFest, but who’s counting?! The Jonas Brothers were great, heating up an already warm evening with lots of energy on stage, not to mention lots of pyrotechnics! I did my show live from right inside the main gates yesterday afternoon and right before 7:00pm, was lucky enough to get to interview them backstage. Kevin, Joe, and Nick couldn’t have been nicer! They were all smiles from the moment I walked into their dressing room, and are obviously enjoying every minute of their current tour. And I must say that it’s very refreshing in a world where an increasing number of “artists” are inexplicably telling us that girls are only as valuable as their pole-dancing techniques and that strip clubs are the place to be, to have musicians that actually act like role models that teens can look up to! Despite their young ages, the Jonas Brothers are much more men than all of those idiot rappers. Way to go, guys!
